Refugee resettlement is the selection and transfer of refugees from a country where they have sought protection to a third country that has permitted them to stay based on long-term or permanent residence status. The United States has a long tradition of welcoming refugees, but its resettlement program has dwindled to low levels in recent years. In September 2021, the U.S. announced that the maximum number of refugees admitted to the country in 2022 will be increased to 125,000 — the highest number since 1993. This map shows which states are in the top 10 in terms of numbers accepting refugees. The key on the left shows exactly how many were resettled.
