On our trip to Paterson, we were able to get a feel of middle eastern cuisine and culture. First we went to a market where we were able to try a variety of different foods, and even buy food to take home. I really enjoyed the experience and ability to walk around as I was able to see different aspects of middle eastern culture, and I was able to try a variety of foods.

After we went to the market we also explored a gold jewelry store. In middle eastern culture women wear gold jewelry when they get married. This is because their husband owns all of their property, so in the event of the divorce the women would get nothing. However with the jewelry, the women can sell it in order to have money for survival. Women sell the jewelry because after they get divorced they have nothing.

The jewelry in the store was beautiful and extravagant, and very expensive. I really enjoyed the experience of going to this store, because it is very different from the culture we have in the US. This is because in the US, spouses will often co sign on houses and other expensive purchases, so in the event of a divorce, neither person is left with nothing. Seeing the jewelry store was impactful to our visit because it was able to show us more about middle eastern culture besides their food. The jewelry store was able to show us middle eastern beliefs and customs, that we would not be able to learn about if we did not go and see the jewelry.
