The blue countries on the map above represent the largest Syrian refugee-hosting countries as of 2022. In March 2011, the Syrian refugee crisis emerged due to violent government suppression of public demonstrations supporting teenagers who were arrested for anti-government graffiti in the southern town of Daraa. As the conflict escalated, millions of Syrians were forced to flee their homes as the country plunged into a brutal civil war. The relentless war continues to endanger the lives of millions of Syrians today, causing more than 16.7 million Syrians to be in desperate need of humanitarian assistance, accounting for 70 percent of the population. While Syrian refugees have sought refuge in more than 130 countries, the majority flee to neighboring countries within the region, including Türkiye, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt.
