The Rohingya are an ethnic minority group from Myanmar that have faced decades of discrimination and repression under successive Myanmar authorities. They have been effectively denied citizenship under the 1982 Citizenship Law, and thus are one of the largest stateless populations in the world. The Rohingya also have faced the military’s crimes against humanity and possible genocide. They endure persecution and violence, are confined to camps and villages without freedom of movement, and are cut off from access to adequate food, health care, education, and livelihoods. As a result, thousands of Rohingya have fled and seek refuge in other countries.
