On June 7th we took a day trip to Paterson, NJ, where we got to visit different Middle Eastern shops, grocery stores, and restaurants. We visited a shop called Al Basha Sweets where we got to try knafeh. Knafeh is a popular Middle Eastern dessert made with cheese that is baked in phyllo dough, which is then soaked in a rose water syrup. It is then garnished with pistachios on top. The knafeh had the perfect balance of sweetness from the syrup, savoriness from the cheese, and good texture from the baked phyllo dough. Overall, I thought the knafeh was very good if you want both a sweet and savory dessert. If you are ever in Paterson, I would highly recommend going to Al Basha Sweets.
