On June 5th, we visited Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, NY, to learn about the refugees and immigrants from the Soviet Union that moved to that area. While there, we stopped for lunch at Tatiana’s Grill that was along the boardwalk. I ordered a caesar salad, the Ukrainian borscht, and the Chicken Kiev with fries. Kiev (Kyiv) is the capital of Ukraine. The chef who refined this dish in the 1800s was from Kiev, which is why it is called Chicken Kiev. Chicken Kiev is pounded chicken that is rolled around cold butter, then coated with egg and breadcrumbs, which is then cooked. The dish was nothing like I was expecting, especially with the amount of butter that was in the inside of it. When I tried to cut the chicken, it was extremely difficult due to how thick the breadcrumb coating was on it, and how much butter was in the inside. Butter oozed out of the chicken and all over my dish. Overall, I thought the Chicken Kiev was very good and would highly recommend it to anybody visiting Tatiana’s Grill in Brighton Beach.
