Visiting Brighton Beach was one of my favorite trips during this Spring Intensive because of the livelihood of this neighborhood in Brooklyn! As we walked through the streets we saw a variety of fresh markets, stores that seemed like they were stuck in time from the 1980s-1990s full of old CD’s or European clothing, Jewish centers, and lots and lots of bakeries with delicious smells that drew us in. Before returning to the boardwalk for lunch, I even got to try a savory pastry filled with chicken and cabbage which I absolutely loved and saw an ice cream truck from the same brand, ‘dadu’, which we had tried in class just the day before when tasting Russian food! Later at the Tatiana Grill, I enjoyed Ukrainian Borscht, a vegetable stew made primarily from beets, with sour cream, Vareniki with potatoes (which reminded me quite a lot of pierogies or small ravioli), and a Caesar salad along with some fries. As we ate, our group was also lucky enough to listen to Mr. Novofastovsky’s refugee story and by the end of the day, I was very full, but happy and grateful to have been able to visit Brighton Beach!
