In 1922, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Transcaucasia formed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), a confederation comprising Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Transcaucasia (which included Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia). The soviets eventually expanded their republics and evolved into a global superpower. Nearly 130 ethnic groups lived in the vast country, spanned many time zones. There was also rules were people needed visas in order to leave and if they got rejected from one then they needed a new invitation and they can’t use the same invitation again in order to leave the soviet union.

When we learned about the Soviet immigration policies I was shocked that the government created a system where Jewish people had to get invitations to apply to leave the nation but oftentimes suffered economic repercussions such as losing their jobs if they did.
It’s interesting to see how the Soviet Union started. It gives lots of background and nuance to all the research we did on the Soviet Union. Because there were so many ethnicities inside the USSR, it makes sense why there was so much division and oppression; especially against the Jewish population.
I was not aware that this was how the Soviet Union grew and evolved, thanks for educating me!
