1861 - The Founding of Pingry
Dr. John Francis Pingry founded the Pingry School as an all-boys school, dedicated to educating his students in both strong academics and morals. He acquired the school from a headmaster who had left his school in Elizabeth, New Jersey, for the Civil War. As the first Headmaster of the Pingry School, Dr. Pingry came up with the school motto Maxima Reverentia Pueris Debutir: the maximum respect is due to the students.
1926 - Establishment of the Honor Code
Pingry students draft and adopt the Honor Code: a set of guidelines for appropriate and civil behavior at school and in society at large. Pingry students made it their mission to uphold the teachings of Dr. Pingry and conduct themselves in an honorable and upright manner as citizens of both the Pingry community and the world.
1949 - Academic Judicial Board
With the faculty’s adoption of the Honor Code, Pingry faculty set up the Academic Judicial Board (AJB): a disciplinary board set up to preside over cases involving Honor Code infractions. The AJB consists exclusively of faculty members.
1988 - Revision of the Honor Code
After 62 years, the Honor Code is revised to adapt to modern times. There is also a growing call to add students to the AJB, to get a student voice in disciplinary decisions.
1994 - The Founding of the Honor Board
After 45 years of faculty administration, disciplinary cases are handed over to the newly established Honor Board, a fully student-driven disciplinary board. Honor Board cases adopt a seven-person jury, with four students and three faculty to reflect the student-driven nature of both the Honor Code and Honor Board.
2021 - Honor Board Cultural Initiative
In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Honor Board launches the Cultural Initiative to recenter the community on its roots in the Honor Code, continuing the legacy of Dr. Pingry.
